Home Sweet Home

A man needs a home. Nobody said it had to be big or fancy but just a place to rest his head. Although I have yet to experience being kicked out to the dog house I thought I should be prepared. I figure it is always better to be safe than sorry.

For all you men out there, here are some things you may want to remember when building your dog house. Here is the dog house I built and here is mans best friend. But as you can see from the photo on the right, not even mans best friend is willing to face the wrath of a woman.

When building your house consider size. Most men build the house according to the size of the dog. The problem is if you have a chiwawa. Instead of basing house size on the size of dog you have you should base it on what size of sleeping room you want. For me if I curl up like a dog I figured 3 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall is the minimum size.

Next is the interior color. Most guys just throw slabs of plywood on. However this could make an itchy bed and you could wake up with a lot of slivers. Panting it will provide much comfort.

One other thing that is many times forgotten is insulation. A couple slabs of wood may be fine in the summer but up here in Canada you would end up waking up like a fly stuck in an ice cube. I used R14 insulation in the floor walls and roof. You’ll also want to be protected from the rain. A nice shingle roof will keep you dry so that your co-workers will not have to put up with the ‘wet dog’ smell ever morning.

Now siding is not a big issue but just incase a friend shows up you may want to have something to show for your self. I chose cedar. I like the smell and look. In fact I think it even beats the faded smokers yellow siding on our home.

The one last thing is make sure you have a sign that you can easily replace. While the dog is at home it says ‘Tammy’ but if I need a place to stay I can easily replace it with a sign with my name. Any friends, family or humanitarian relief organizations can easily find me.

You will be able to proudly say this is my home.
